Data Scientist

Our client is looking for Data Scientists to work at the heart of the transformation of their statistics. You will use your skills as a data scientist to harness insight from a diverse range of data sources. The role will focus on the development of reproducible analytical pipelines using a range of coding languages (notably Python, PySpark and R) across a range of cloud based and local platforms. The roles also provide an opportunity for cutting edge data science analysis with the aim of producing timelier and more granular statistics.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Write python code and functions in a way that is reusable, fits best standards guidance, and are robustly unit tested

  • Create reproducible pipelines for systematic processing of statistical data, based on initial design documents. This includes writing documentation, designing and conducting tests, reviewing and managing versions of code.
  • Work with subject matter experts to understand the statistics that need to be produced and the statistical methods that underpin them.
  • Conduct data analysis and visualization of the key datasets used to ensure high quality methods and statistical outputs.
  • Communicate key characteristics about data sources used within any project and how decisions taken on their use will have downstream impacts on data quality and suitability.
  • Report on the progress of prototype systems to customers, clearly articulating the impact of various data processing steps on the outputs.
  • Maintain and review documentation for statistical and data processing functions, as well as data processing pipelines.
  • Manage working relationships with stakeholders across ONS keeping people up to date on progress and highlighting any risks with projects.
  • Apply agile project management principles to managing projects and tasks on a day-to-day basis.
  • Supporting colleagues across ONS in the development of their data science skills.
